Going to my 2nd "The Keycon Halloween Social" October 23, 2004
I so much looked forward to this year's KeyCon Halloween social, since this year, I was going to have an outfit that was "Sci-Fi" related! I had always loved Uhura's little red mini-dress from the original Star Trek series and had always wanted the outfit. At last year's KeyCon Halloween social I had won a $ 25 gift certificate towards Alex's dressmaking services and jumped at the chance to have her make the dress for me. And who better to do it than a Sci-Fi fan!!
After last year's social I lost track of the gift certificate. However, Alex didn't forget! When I as HE met up with her at another event last summer we got to talking about it and made plans to pick up the material. We did just that a few weeks later and met at Fabricland to pick up the material. When I got there Alex had already picked out a few different fabric combinations and I decided to let her pick, since she would know what would be closest to what Uhura's dress would be made of! After leaving the store I just couldn't wait to see the results!
Then it was time to "get measured!" That was kinda different for me, since not too many people have seen my transition from "Him" to "Her", and I kinda like it that way. Yet this was different. I mean..if a GUY can't get comfortable with HIS DRESSMAKER, then what! With all the right info she needed, Alex was set to make Uhura's uniform! And I was like a kid waiting for Christmas!
The week before the social I stopped in at Alex's to try the dress on so she could make final adjustments. Once I had it on and looked in the full length mirror, I didn't want to take it off! Alex pinned it in several places, for the waist, sleeves and the "Finger Tip Length" hemline :-)
The evening of the social went better than I had planned. Since my girlfriend is not accepting of "Sabrina" I usually get ready somewhere else. Yet as luck would have it she had made plans to go visit a friend of hers for the evening giving me the free time I needed to get ready at home! Although you would think it would be a pleasant expeirence...it was pretty stressful. My GF has not seen me en fem and had no desire to when I first talked with her about me back in 2000, so for now, it is my little secret. So you can imagine, yes, I was a little concerned she would come home unexpected. However, she said she would be home around 10 P.M., so I took the chance and by 8:30 P.M. I was ready and very excited when I looked in the full length mirror! There I was...wearing the dress I had only dreamed of wearing so long ago. See, dream for all you want...dreams do come true!
I got to the Montecasino Legion Hall about 9 P.M. and there was Alex, my seamstress, working the door! I met up with my daughter who was dressed as "Tinkerbell" in the outfit we had bought last summer at Lady Godiva Boutique. She has found the wings she needed to complete the outfit and looked fabulous! My ex and her husband were there and lots of others I've gotten to know from attending all these KeyCon functions.
Skye as "Tinkerbell" and Sabrina as "Uhura"
Sabrina as "Uhura"
with her "Seamstress" AlexThe evening was a lot of fun and it was spent dancing the night away, parading around on the dance floor for the costume contest, and looking through ticket numbers for the silent auction draws! And of course, LOTS of pictures!
A very special Thank-you to Alex for making Uhura's uniform for me. *HUGS* Now I have the perfect outfit to wear to next year's KeyCon convention!
